Now at last you can troll left or right bank, and reach those holes and ledges you can never reach.

This is river trolling!

The object in starting to fish a river is to find the right spots.  Where are the fish and are they on the top, mid-level, or on the bottom?  For this reason, more than one Lure Leader is nice to have.  If you have three, set one on top, one mid-level, and one on the bottom.

Your next problem is to find productive spots in the river.  Change spots by changing tow points.  With some planning and more than one Lure Leader, you can give both right and left banks a good try in just a few hours.

The best spots for salmon are deep holes; go down deep.  Best for Steelhead are just off the main current of the river 3-9 feet deep; head or tail of a deep hole.

Use a 8-9 foot medium, light action rod.  If you want real fun order a Lure Leader trolling rod with two reel seats and two line guides.  This is the ultimate in river fishing.  Until Lure Leader builds a reel able to take two lines and incorporate two line guides on a pole.

Do not bring a hammer to tap the pole holder down.   It is much more fun to hunt up a nice, smooth river bank rock and tap it down.  You are not out to build a house but have fun.

Now go all the way and buy two river bank pole holders.  Have a good lunch and enjoy fishing while eating - bon appetite et bon chance.

Hand lines and fish nets have been practiced since the time of Jesus. The advanced biblical fishermen used a spaddle, which was a piece of wood in the shape and thickness of a ping pong paddle. It was on this that the fish line was wound when a fish was caught. Fancy reels costing a thousand dollars did not exist. One need not buy a Lure Leader rod with double line guides and two reel seats to fish with a lure leader. All that is required is a simple line winder in many different styles and configurations. Some of these can be purchased for less than 10 dollars and serve the fisherman perhaps better than a lure leader trolling pole. The advantage is obvious as the line winder need not be put in a pole holder. Further, it can be placed any place on the boat. When a fish is caught, the line and lure leader can be retrieved as fast or faster than using a fishing reel. Buy at least one line winder and give it a try!
